Ideally, my mission is to graduate from this design limbo. I want to I have been saving photographs, clipping articles, and tearing apart magazines for the better half of a year, so I am finally consolidating my research, printing them out, and filing them in "The Book". I have no design experience, but I have a love for Apartment Therapy, HGTV, and Ikea. That's a start, right?
Design Restrictions
I work in a dormitory at a private boarding school. As I sleep where I work, I cannot alter the apartment in any drastic way. This includes painting the walls, remove the carpeting, or adding any complicated hardware that may compromise the wall structure.Starting July 21, I will be moving to a different staff apartment in the same building with the same layout. I am looking at this opportunity as a reason to finally get down to business. I'll have almost a solid month to work on things before the my students return for the new academic year. I love to maintain an open door policy with my students, but I would prefer to entertain them in a space that feels like a home away from home.
My apartment is a simple single bedroom with a multipurpose room (read: living room, dining room, and office) and a kitchenette. With space limitations, I would prefer investing in furniture and storage items that can serve multiple functions. My main concern is my work space dominating my living space. Removing my computer from my bedroom was a difficult, but necessary step.
Color Palette
From middle school, my favorite color was blue, and that has not changed. My high school colors were red, white, and blue. My alma mater, University of Florida, is orange and blue. My new Nissan Versa is metallic blue. I just can't seem to get away from it. I love blue, but I don't want a case of the blues. I want to learn to embrace other colors, and not just greens and purples because they are close enough to blue.
I want to experiment with color. Bright colors. Not too much white as I drop stuff on everything. I want to paint, sew, and be crafty. I want to do stuff myself to develop a sense of ownership, not just consumerism. I want to hunt stuff down, and look forward to its arrival. I want to learn how to match, color coordinate, and make mismatched items work together.
Is that too much to ask?

Personally, I think teal/soft blue + yellow is a nice combination for a house. I know if I had a new, empty room for myself it would be my theme. :)
